Growing up in New Jersey, on the edge of the New York City metropolitan area, electropop singer-songwriter Halsey was influenced by the big city and its music scenes both current and past. Born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane in 1994, Halsey took her stage name from a street and train stop in Brooklyn where she spent a lot of time during her formative years. It’s also an anagram of her first name.

Now based in the city proper, Halsey has embarked on a path to stardom. She reached spot No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart with Badlands, along with international acclaim. Now, she’s gearing up for her sophomore release, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, in June.

Bursting at the seams with talent
Halsey grew up with an interest in music, playing a number of instruments throughout her childhood and teenage years. She started with string instruments, including the cello and violin, and developed her musical chops as she picked the acoustic guitar as her preferred instrument. Her interest in art didn’t stop with music, though. Halsey was also a gifted student in the field of visual arts. She took part in advanced placement art classes and was accepted into the highly selective Rhode Island School for Design before financial limitations halted attendance.

Struggles with finding the right life path eventually meant Halsey spent most nights crashing with friends and acquaintances, a situation that gave her her first break in the music world. Showing up at a hotel party in New Jersey, she made contact with a few producers. That eventually led to Halsey making the first professional recording of her work and, a few weeks later, putting the song on SoundCloud one night. Before the sun rose the next morning, she had offers from five labels.

A quick trip to the top
Within a few years, Halsey has gone from the fringe of the industry to its upper levels. With multi-instrumentalist talent and an electropop sound that catches the ears of listeners and strikes a chord with many of them, her two albums have led to brushes with celebrities and bands she once looked up to from afar.

A Twitter conversation with idol Lady Gaga was a high-water mark for Halsey, and she’s worked with hot acts like EDM duo The Chainsmokers. Additionally, she’s seen strong success developing her brand, working on a collaboration with MAC Cosmetics. She also had a highly successful debut headlining tour, with the Badlands Tour covering an entire year and bringing her on swings through Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Australia, Europe and Japan.

Building the kingdom
With the pending release of Hopeless Fountain Kingdom fast approaching, Halsey is ready to dive back into touring. She already has a slate of festival dates lined up, including a number of European appearances at major events like Germany’s Hurricane Festival and the Reading Festival in Reading, U.K. With the new album on its way and plenty of days between the festival experiences scheduled, it won’t be surprising to see Halsey set out in support of Hopeless Fountain Kingdom in the coming months.
